SM Makati: Shifting Workwear

Posted on Wednesday, 17 September 2014

A lot of people think that my wardrobe is bottomless, but I actually repeat clothes a lot. I’ve always found it practical to invest in classic pieces that work for my body type. If they fit perfectly, I’m definitely wearing them again. If I find a certain style that is versatile enough to go from day to night, I’m definitely buying it.

This is why I have a ton of shift dresses in my closet! Move over, bodycon dresses, because shift dresses are much more comfortable and sophisticated. They’re great for work too! I usually wear shift dresses to my meetings because they automatically make me look decent and professional. (The last thing you want to do in a professional setting is distract people with unnecessary skin exposure!)

But what *can* you do to modify a knee-length shift dress? I love wearing shift dresses as is, but different occasions call for different styling. These kinds of work dresses need not always be boring, since there are various ways to make them more exciting:

image

1) A) Use a belt to shorten your dress to your desired length.

This is a technique that I often use for all my good but awkward length dresses. I’m just average height (I’m only 5’3” without heels!) with a short torso-longer legs proportion, so I always play with proportions, and try to elongate my figure by showing off my legs. (This explains all my leg-baring OOTDs!)

image

B) Use a belt to define your waist.

This creates the illusion of a curvier figure, and also acts like an additional accessory to the whole outfit. I chose a skinny black belt with a gold buckle to match my favorite gold jewelry.

Choosing the best belt for your body type is important, unless looking frumpy doesn’t bother you at all. If you’re petite or pear-shaped, go for skinny belts that won’t overwhelm your frame. If you’ve got an hourglass figure, make sure your belt emphasizes the tiniest part of your waist (don’t go for the ones that rest at the hip). If you have a long torso, you can get away with wide belts.

image

2) Wear a blazer over your belted dress, and match it with boots/booties.

Perfect way to make your work dress go from day-to-night. Choose a non-black blazer to make your outfit pop, and skip the office pumps for edgier shoes!

image

3) Wear a knit top/sweater over your dress, and accessorize with a statement necklace.

It was only recently that I appreciated layering over dresses! I love how my skirt collection seems like it has somewhat doubled, now that I can make my dresses look like skirts too! Best to go for cropped sweaters and knits to balance out the length of the shift dress.

Also, statement necklaces are always your best friend.

The bag and dress are available at The SM Store in SM Makati. You might also want to check out the sleeveless version of this dress, as well as the rack of SM Accessories where I got the statement necklace in my last photo.

SM Makati: Different Ways To Style A White Button-Down Shirt

Posted on Monday, 8 September 2014

If you’ve been following my outfits for a while, you’ve probably already noticed the abundance of white tops in my wardrobe. I’ve always believed that the classic white shirt is the most essential style staple. It’s a perfect blank canvas that can suit different styles and different occasions.

While there are different kinds of white tops, I’m very partial to the white button-down shirt. Once you realize how powerful it is, you’ll find yourself looking for various versions of it, or you’ll want to always challenge yourself on how uniquely you can style it. Take a cue from the sophisticated Carolina Herrera - she wears her white button-down to all opportune moments, including formal events!

Recently, I found a good white button-down shirt while shopping at The SM Store in SM Makati. I wore it in 3 different ways to prove my point. Actually, I could go on and on for a week wearing the same shirt… if only it weren’t gross, haha!

image

French school girl look! I wore my SM Woman white button-down with an SM GTW plaid high-waist skirt and a pair of loafers from SM Parisian.

image

Style tip: Don’t be afraid to play with prints and colors.

Red and green isn’t just for Christmas, and you can actually mix to different kinds and sizes of plaids together!

SM Woman top + GTW by SM skirt + SM Accessories earrings + shoes = only P2000! I swear I can’t even get a top for this amount in other stores.

image

Pastel party look. Less is more! Ambassador of modesty speaking - No need to reveal too much skin or wear too-tight bodycon dresses to impress your date. There’s nothing sexier than a slightly unbuttoned white shirt!

image

Style tip: Have you ever been to an event where literally EVERBODY is wearing black? Stand out in a crowd by looking pretty in pink like Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods! While I’m often guilty of wearing black all the time, pink and pastels always make for a unique and refreshing look.

SM Woman top + GTW by SM shorts + SM Accessories bracelet + earrings = only P1600! What a steal!

image

Casual, conservative chic! Here’s one look that is so versatile that you can wear it to events, to work, to church, or… to EVERYWHERE!

image

Style tip: Throw in a metallic clutch and pointy heels to dress up your casual denims!

Avoid looking too bulky or too covered up by bunching up your sleeves a little. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again and again = Showing off your legs? Wear a conservative top. Showing off your chest? Cover your legs. Balance is key!

image

SM Woman top + SM Woman Jeans jeggings + SM Accessories necklace + earrings + clutch = 5 items for only 2,500!

image

Another awesome thing about white button-downs is that they look wonderful with just about any accessories.

image

The SM Accessories section is quite the treasure trove lately! I usually go straight to where all the gold and black accessories are. Here, I layered two necklaces (one thin and one thick) together, and finished the whole look off with these unique-looking earrings.

This is only the first of my many The SM Store Makati posts to come! I’ll be blogging about them every week, and you can also find my posters when you go to SM Makati. In the posters, you can find some of my current discounted picks! At the moment, Badgley Mischka shoes have a 30% discount, while S&H shoes and United Colors of Benetton bags have a 15% discount from September 5-14.

This shade of red in spring/summer is so rare and refreshing, especially among the sea of pastels and pale colors that are being sold everywhere recently.

Once again, I’m wearing a one-piece dress because the summer heat has been drastically draining all my creative juices. I’m the laziest person when it comes to coordinating separates right now, but at least, in the future, if I run out of inspiration, I can always backtrack to this season where I wore nothing but dresses. There are so many things to appreciate about visual (online) diaries, and being able to look back in order to improve my present self has always been one of my favorites.

P.S. I caught a stomach virus last week, and it was an absolutely horrible experience. Thankfully, I’m fully recovered now. Take care of your health, everyone! Happy Sunday!

Never mind that my title totally sounds like a campaign for recycling. Dresses are really my lifesavers this summer, and I must say that this particular one is such a fun piece to wear. White dresses make the best templates for experimentation. Imagine it like a clean sheet of paper that has yet to be modified in any way. The possibilities are endless!

L’Oreal Color Riche: Lip Love

Posted on Friday, 14 February 2014

I’m very predictable when it comes to dressing up and doing my make-up. I rarely drastically change my style to the point of no recognition, and when I do, there’s always some sort of template that I follow. I’ve tried and tested this template enough to know what works best for me and my changing moods, and I’m pretty sure most of you have already noticed the slight changes that I do to keep my outfits as classic and elegant as possible.

One of my most favorite techniques to quickly change how I look is by using different colored lipsticks! I’m so obsessed that I feel totally incomplete without them (the same way I can’t go out without earrings on).

We all have our own morning routines, and mine usually end with a lipstick in hand. I only choose what lip color to wear after I’ve finalized my outfit! I am a personal style blogger after all! I’m assuming beauty bloggers would base their outfits on the color of their make-up? (It would be interesting to do a survey among different kinds of bloggers, lol)

Anyhow, the reason why I leave the lip color last is because it’s my way of deciding what kind of vibe I want to exude throughout the day, and because it is so powerful that it can make the simplest outfits look so much dressier than they really are.

It works the opposite way too. Think your outfit is a little fancy? Try a more subdued lip color to balance it out.

Below are some examples of how lipstick colors can complement daily outfits:

When beige/nude is too pale, pink is too girly, and red is too intense, go for a coral shade. I particularly love Wild Tango because it has slight pink undertones in it that makes the color super flattering.

Wearing this bright cherry red color seems to always make people overlook the fact that I’m lazy to accessorize. Count on Viva Red to also give you an instantly sexy look without any skin exposure!

One would expect to wear bright lipstick with neutral outfits, but sometimes I like to keep it simple and understated so as not to look too intimidating or too out of place during the day. Dewy Beige is one of those my-lips-but-better colors that need to be in every girl’s bag! I asked my boyfriend which of these three looks he liked most and he chose this one because it makes me and my lips look friendly (a.k.a. kissable? lol).

Enjoy Valentines Day, everyone! It’s also a pay day weekend so it’s definitely the best time to splurge on these sexy new lipsticks!

L’Oreal Color Riche Le Rouge a.k.a. the World’s No. 1 Lipsticks have precious lotus, argan and rose oils in them so you’re bound to have infinitely moisturized lips. The 15 new and improved shades are all very pigmented, and the rich color pay-off makes you want to collect them all! They’re now available in all major department stores nationwide for only PHP 625!

Color Burst

I know I’m rarely seen wearing this many colors all at the same time. What happened and why did I suddenly turn into a colorful spring fairy? It seems that the transition arrived a little bit too early this year!

Last night, after the Gingersnaps 20th Anniversary event (will blog about it soon), I had an hour to kill at the mall while I waited for the boyfriend to pick me up for dinner. I pretty much headed straight for the racks where all the pinks and pastels were. Resisted the urge to spend unnecessarily, but I was thisclose to buying at least 1 bright and colorful item in every single clothing store.

It is way too early for this.

P.S. My hair is growing at an abnormally fast rate. Haven’t decided yet if I should keep the length or grow it out!
