Baby G: Modern Moroccan

If only this were wearable in the desert, eh? It took a while for me to actually muster up the courage to wear a turban out. I’ve always loved it on other people. Most of them managed to pair it with equally lovely things that I didn’t have in my own wardrobe (which is all ribbons, peter pan collars and dainty things). But voila, I got this playsuit as a gift all the way from UK a few months ago, and finally, it seemed like something I could wear with a turban! Major Moroccan vibes from the silk print.

Then I felt like I needed to wear accessories to complete this total “out of my comfort zone” look. If I’m going to try something out, might as well try my very best not to do it half-heartedly. Elegant arm candy with a chunky modern-looking watch - not a bad combination at all, I think.

This is my new Baby G watch, thanks to Time Depot, the authorized distributors of Casio in the Philippines. SO MANY NOSTALGIC FEELS! I haven’t worn a Baby G since elementary school! Finding out I was going to get a new one recently made me think of that time in my childhood when everybody was crazy about these watches. The best part about them was always the backlight. It always had that special button that was so popular among kids back then.

Now it seems like they created designs that aren’t just targeted to children. Watch this video of Jun Hasegawa, one of my favorite Japanese models, modeling different kinds of Baby G watches and making them all look super trendy and casual. <3

Flats Fever

Posted on Monday, 9 April 2012

Long overdue entry on some of the flat shoes that I use. Contrary to popular belief, I also rest my feet from heels from time to time, especially when I travel or have photography work.

When I was a kid, I used to be obsessed with watches. I don’t quite remember why, but I always asked for watches whenever my parents would offer to give me something. Not clothes, not toys, not food. Now that I think about it, I was a strange kid with a strange obsession!

My favorite watch was this green and blue Little Mermaid one I wore back in 3rd grade. Ariel was the highlight of the watch’s face, while Sebastian, Flounder, and other characters like Prince Eric and Ursula were on the watch’s strap. I’d always wear it to school, with my black and white uniform and the required black and white hair accessories. Suddenly, among the sea of blacks and whites, there was a colorful watch on someone’s wrist.

I also remember wearing my Baby G watches to death back in 5th grade. I had a pink and white one that had a cool blue-ish backlight that was so popular among my friends back then. Somehow, when you’re a kid, anything that lights up is automatically considered cool! Like those rubber shoes with red blinking lights that until now I still see on the coolest kids I know.

In high school, I also had a number of watches that I used. Most of them were thin-ish ones that had cute patterns and designs like polkadots and flowers! I guess the school rule on “no jewelry and colored hair accessories” made me feel like the only kind of fun I could inject in my black and white uniform was a watch, because my school didn’t have any guidelines about it.

I’d watch the time incessantly during class. “5 more minutes before this class ends!” or  ”Only 10 minutes left before the next class begins!” And you know how looking at the time so often makes it so much slower?

"Cellphones can also tell the time, so why wear a watch?", I thought to myself. I also felt like it was so hard to match my existing watches with the rest of my wardrobe all of a sudden. No more Catholic school uniforms after spending a decade or so wearing them? I needed a style intervention… badly. So I ditched wearing watches during my whole stay in Ateneo because I didn’t want to be bothered with what to wear while I was busy studying (haha)

Last month, I found myself falling in love all over again. Almost 6 years of not wearing watches, and then suddenly, this shining beauty! Of course, I found my taste had changed through the years too since I never owned any similar watches before. I think, more than wearing watches to tell the time, I consider them more as an added fashion accessory now.

Sheen is a line by Casio targeted to young sophisticated ladies who are into these kinds of sparkly and girly designs. Nakashima Mika endorses these watches, so just imagine how enthusiastic I was when I found out I could get my hands (wrists?) on my own Sheen watch. And you all know how much of a sucker I am when it comes to Japanese brands, lol.

If you’re interested in getting your own Sheen watch, drop by any Time Depot branch since they’re the authorized distributors of Casio here in the Philippines. I got mine in Rockwell, and they volunteered to fix the metal links for me so the watch can fit my wrist perfectly. Awesome service! <3 Here's the link to the watch that I own, btw!

One random, rainy afternoon last February, my good friend Edric and I decided to catch up on life. We haven’t seen each other for the longest time, but we definitely still continued to silent support each other’s work via different social networking platforms like Tumblr and Facebook. Last year, he has been photographing a lot of local and international bloggers as a full-fledged hobby. Being able to witness him develop this penchant of his from the start (since I was the first Lookbook-er he ever shot, I believe), I can’t help but feel like a proud momma.

The weather was uncooperative the day of our reunion, so I decided to compensate by wearing something brighter than my usual. I rarely wear jeans, but these are an exception. How can anyone not love ribbons on your pants!?

Also, I hope my rain-induced grogginess didn’t show in these pictures. Edric and I hated the rain and intense humidity that day, but now that it’s the start of summer, I’d very much like rainy weather again please!

Toss the Feathers

(Everything from Forever 21) Hype this look on Lookbook here.

Recently, I’ve been experimenting with a lot of different styles. Normally I can be seen wearing either something that’s super dainty, lace and ribbons and all, or something that’s very basic and preppy with my favorite collared button-downs and black platform booties. While these remain to be my default looks, once in a while, like a normal human being (lol), I get bored and become incredibly impulsive when it comes to picking clothes out.

I don’t think I have ever been this close to trying boho-style out. I’ve had feather accessories hidden away in my trinkets box for the longest time, but I’ve only decided to bring them out now. I’ve always been very iffy about this style on me, for some reason. I guess we all have our own insecurities and one of mine would be having a face that’s not very versatile. No matter what I do, I can never work “fierce”, “indie” and “model-esque” out. This being said, hippie and boho styles have been quite polarizing for me.

One day, however, I went to Forever 21 Megamall not feeling like myself. AHA! The perfect time to pick something unconventional out! I skipped all the girly creams and pinks, color block styles, summery nauticals and trendy oriental-themed items (these are the current trends in the store, btw), and headed straight to a section of the store where I rarely get anything for myself. It helps to be in a huge store where you can find pretty much anything and everything.

It doesn’t hurt to try new things out once in a while. It actually feels very nice and cathartic! Like you’ve finally managed to get out of your comfort zone and get over the most shallow insecurities you’ve always had.

Now I believe anyone can pull anything off, just as long as you interpret it your own way so as not to look like you’re trying too hard. It took me a while to try rocker styles out, until I managed to work my way around it. How? By wearing a fluffy tutu skirt with a biker vest, of course!

P.S. Super high pink blush and yellow nail polish inspired by Momoko Ogihara who is my favorite mode gal at the moment. <3
